Memoranda of Understanding
The Federal Magistrates Court does not have its own registries. It relies on arrangements made with the Federal Court and Family Court for its efficient operation.
The arrangements are supported by Memorandum of Understanding between the Chief Executive Officers of the courts. The Memorandum of Understanding provide detail to assist the staff of each of the courts to
understand and implement the arrangements, which are very general in their nature.
The significant elements of the arrangements and memoranda are:
All court filing is done at Federal Court or Family Court registry counters.
Primary dispute resolution services are provided by court counsellors and registrars of the Family Court or the Federal Court, as appropriate.
Most arrangements in relation to listings are made in the registries of the Federal Court and the Family Court. Some arrangements, after the first court date, will be made through the associate to the federal magistrate who is hearing the matter.
Registrars of the Federal Court and the Family Court have been appointed as Registrars of the Federal Magistrates Court.
